July 2012: Special posting - Freak weather...
Saturday it rained...and rained and rained and rained...by 11pm it was just pouring straight over the drains in the road. Why did it rain so much? (not just this day but substantially over the last few weeks) - there was an interesting feature on the news about a jetstream that is overhead which should be much further north. It is reported that a month's worth of rain fell in one day.
The town is surrounded by fields, flood plains and water meadows. In conditions like this, they just can't cope with the amount of water and it spills across roads.
I'd arranged to meet friends 20 miles away in the morning. I saw online that the main road was shut, so checked again in the morning. All seemed clear. When I got to the edge of town all the roads out were closed because of flooding! The only thing to do was postpone, put my slr in my mountain bike rucksack and go exploring locally to see what was going on...
Here are a few things I found. They are posted mainly as record photographs. Most people I spoke to on my travels had not seen flooding like this in years.
Main road out of town, would you drive through that? Road closed.
B road just off juction with A road out of town. Would you drive through that?

Road out of town - closed. Not driving through that! Over a foot of water on the left hand turn.

The "will they won't they game". Stretch of A road outside of town. The road was closed to traffic coming out of town, not clear if it was open the other way. See the first car deciding not to attempt it (doing a u-turn), the last car is also reversing to a u-turn.

The "will they won't they game part II" You don't want to do that. B road out of town. Road closed.

That's what happens when you try and drive through it. B road out of town - road closed

Footpath near river, I wasn't going to walk or cycle through that.
Allotments - see the water half way up the bin.

Somewhere near the tree is a footpath. Not today.
Still time to find an abstract.

Wellies required.

Unfortunately there was damage to property, the water is right across the road here.

It wasn't clear where the land should be in some places!

This was all land before, quite a nice landscape scene:
Again, this was all land, the sky left in as the dominant feature to show what a nice day it was today!

One thing you see in some of these photos is the blue sky and clouds! It was just like a summer's day today, a complete change from the rain of yesterday!
