December 2012: Cloud watching

Last weekend it rained from Friday evening through to Sunday. There was, however, a break for an hour or so on Sunday morning.

The sky was great, there were some moving, rainy clouds and every now and again the sun emerged from behind them. It made of a spot of cloud watching.

I spotted this small river flowing through a field on the outskirts of town. It is always worth watching the sky change, the photos below show this. In each, see how much the sky has changed. When the sky is good, what do you include? The land or the sky as a dominant feature?

First photo: Portrait, sky in upper two thirds of photo. Sigma lens @ 10mm, ND Grad filter used.

Second photo: Four minutes after photo one. Portrait, sky in upper half. Sigma lens @ 10mm, NG Grad filter used.

Third photo: Six minutes after photo one. Portrait, sky in upper two thirds of photo. Sigma lens @ 10mm, ND Grad filter used.

Fourth photo: Fourteen minutes after photo one. The sun is coming from the right hand side. Landscape, sky in upper two thirds of photo. Sigma lens @ 10mm, ND Grad filter used.

Fifth photo: Fifteen minutes after photo one. The sun is out and has changed the light on the grass on the left of the river. Portrait, sky in upper half of photo. Sigma lens @ 10mm, ND Grad filter used.

It's worth just watching the sky as it can add so much to a photo. Compare the five above, which do you prefer.
