The iconic Red Arrows...

Everyone loves The Red Arrows. Their displays are simply breathtaking, and their display at Bournemouth Air Festival did not disappoint.

For the 20 minute display I positioned myself on the promenade between the two piers. The main restriction was the lovely midday sun in the sky. Although a great sight, it prevented taking photographs in one direction.

Listening to the commentary I heard that The Red Arrows only carry around 5 minutes of smoke - red, white and blue. There was plenty of time to watch the display, listen to the commentary on the formations and wait to take a few photographs where the red, white and blue smoke was being released.

My favourites are below:

The position I chose turned out to be a great spot! The Arrows would come directly towards the crowd, so I had the opportunity to get some head-on photographs!

(The final flypast)

All photographs taken handheld, f7.1, varying shutter speeds 1/2500th second to 1/4000th second, ISO 200, varying focal lengths between 78mm and 187mm. RAW files have been used.

There is only one way of photographing the Red Arrows going at speeds of up to (and over) 400mph; that is with a digital SLR. You have full control of the shutter speed and focal lengths and well as zero 'shutter lag'.
