July 2013: On the Cobb...

It's nearing the end of the camera club season, so there was a group outing down to Lyme Regis. Arriving on The Cobb at about 7.15 it was obvious that there wasn't going to be a dramatic sunset as there was not a cloud in the sky. However, over the next 2 1/2 hours there was some lovely evening light.

Lyme Regis is part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The Cobb is also famous for appearing in the film "The French Lieutenant's Woman". It is hugely historic; the first written mention of the Cobb is in a 1328 document describing it being damaged by storms.

For me part of the learning involves watching how the light changes and being patient. A successful evening of photography is one where I end up with a lot of useable photographs. Here is a selection.

My first photograph showing the boats in the harbour:

A three photo wide angle panoramic stitch taken from standing on the Cobb wall:

In the lovely evening light it was nice to sit on the Cobb wall and watch the fishermen:

There is also plenty of detail around the harbour, such as this chain:

Or the fishing nets hanging off the fishing boats:

Or even this:

(ok, this must have been spotted before!)

There was also a chance to try something different. This was an attempt to create a sun "starburst" using a small aperture, f32. See how the rays from the sun are visible.

This was fun trying to capture some movement of the people walking on the Cobb wall, using a small aperture (f22) to slow the shutter speed down to create some movement:

The evening finished with a coffee and photo review before heading home. Other photos are available, please ask.
