October 2012: Beach Motocross

Weymouth Beach Motocross is a national motocross event attracting over 250 top riders from all over England. The beach course provides for speeds of up to 70mph with jumps, chicanes and high speed straights.

Last year I positioned myself on a straight as the bikes came towards me, but the course layout had changed, so I picked a spot on the promenade which gave me three potential action spots. Getting there early is a must as it can get 5-6 deep with spectators on the promenade.

To the left was a jump, in the middle was a jump, and to the right was a turn coming towards me.

(seven photo handheld panoramic)

All photos are jpegs straight off camera (no editing apart from some crops to remove unwanted space at the top of photos). They are all taken from the same location, moving means losing your spot and being at the back of the crowd.

The jumpers:

(I prefer the top one of the two as the complete shadow is showing)

(I've included this one as it shows the view across Weymouth Bay to Bat's Head, a stunning backdrop!)
(I'd probably crop a quarter off the top of this photo).

Through the sand:

(the distracting feature of this is the tape and the posts in the background, the tape is burnt out due to the sun. Would you clone it out or keep it in?)

Of course, there are always fallers who have to get themselves and their bike out of the sand.

Falls can be potentially dangerous:

Riders generally have to lift their own bikes out of the sand:

For those of you who are local, compare the photos that were good enough to be published in the papers with mine.
