May 2012: Weymouth Kite Festival
The last few weekends have been a near washout with rain and grey skies. It was nice to see a little bit of sunshine and blue sky over the bank holiday weekend. Over this particular weekend, Weymouth in Dorset plays host to the annual International Beach Kite Festival. On the sunday, the various kites take to the skies including various team in individual flying displays.
The 2012 olympic sailing is being hosted in Weymouth and Portland, Dorset. Weymouth and Portland is the largest Olympic and Paralympic venue outside London.
After watching for a while I felt that taking pictures of the kites in the sky could mean the photographs were taken anywhere. My challenge was to include something in the photographs that showed it was a kite festival in Weymouth and to try and include some colour. Each photo was taken handheld with my 55-250mm lens.
The eyes, a burst of colour against a blue sky:

Kites on the golden Weymouth sands starting to take to the sky:

Soldier kites against the backdrop of Weymouth Promenade, including the iconic Jubilee Clock. The blue tower you see about 1/3 of the way in from the left, in front of the white gable wall is one of the new laser towers.

Weymouth's newest iconic structure, the viewing tower:

Framing Weymouth's viewing tower. I had to wait a bit for this photograph to get the drifting circular kite to frame the tower. The owner of this kite (the person holding it in the photo) has spotted the photo online and I am pleased to supply copies of the two photographs I took.

It was a good three hours or so watching Weymouth's International Beach Kite Festival. As the kites are moving in the sky I would call this photography "movement", but with Weymouth included in the photographs, it could also be classed as "landscape".
